Parkour Video

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

I shot this last week using a Nikon D300s and a selection of lenses. The move to try video was inspired by a friend of mine who produces news videos and our combined interest in convergence journalism and the DSLR video capabilities. The idea was to produce a piece that a photographer could go and shoot alone. We however both went along so she could understand the limitations of the technology and I could
gain an insight into what she required for a short news piece.

The piece was shot for a newspaper website. This is an interesting process and the learning curve was steep. I have found that there are many skills I have as a photographer which translated well to video, but the visual code of video is quite different and thinking in sequences was new to me.

I was pleased to have had some excellent training in both the visual code of video and the new software needed for editing.I like to know what I am doing and have some decent training before trying new things.

I will continue to work with video. I found it an enjoyable experience and look forward to developing the associated work flow to speed up the post-production. I am pleased with the results of the video but there is still much to learn. I was restrained by my lack of experience in the field but as my confidence grows so will my creativity.

My concern is that while I am experimenting with video I am not shooting as many photographs as I would normally do and this makes me quite twitchy. This made me realise that as much as I enjoy video and the learning experience I love photography and finding a balance between the two will be an interesting process.
